Zorby J. Hoefer, 88, of Topeka, passed away Wednesday, March 23, 2011.
Zorby was born on March 6, 1923, in Hutchinson, son of Elmer D. and Mary Dot (Long) Hoefer. He grew up in and around the Hutchinson area. Zorby was a lifelong horse enthusiast, having spent many hours riding and taking care of horses on his uncle's farm. Following high school, he entered the US Army and served during WWII. Following the war, Zorby did odd jobs in general labor work and later reentered the Army for another term. Zorby had lived at Plaza West Regional Health Center, Topeka, for the past ten years, and considered the staff and residents as his family. Zorby loved to sit in the dining room, drink coffee and visit with the staff, other residents, and any visitors that passed by.
He is survived by his sister, Betty Knarr, Reading, Pennsylvania, a half-brother, and a half-sister.
Zorby's wishes were to be cremated, and no services will be held. Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel is assisting with arrangements.
