Zachery David Kays of Topeka, KS died on Monday, August 29, 2011. Born on July 21, 1984, in Sedalia, MO, he was the son of Vicki Herrick and Jerry Kays. A celebration of his life will be held at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at 1:00 PM. Memorial gifts are requested in the form of donations to Vicki Herrick.
Zack realized at a young age that music was his passion. As a self-taught guitarist, he reached a level of proficiency that was rivaled by the masters. Music was always present when he was around. When Zack wasn't working on a new riff or trying to master an old classic, you could find him playing with his Labrador, Biscuit—a companion of over seven years. As a connoisseur of microbrews, Zack had begun to work on crafting his own beers, and truly found joy in this endeavor. He was a fan of KU Athletics, and a Jayhawk could always be found somewhere on his clothing.
Survivors include his mother, Vicki Herrick; his father, Jerry Kays; his sister, Allison Kays; his brother Jordan Kays; and sister, Elizabeth Meller. Additional survivors include aunts and uncles: David Boyer, Bobbie Shoemaker, Janet Cowen, Carol Schaefer, Roger Kays, and J.D. Kays as well as numerous cousins. He is also survived by his maternal step-grandfather, Robert Wayne Palmer. In special recognition, the family wishes to acknowledge Bryce M. Baker, Andrew J. Burghart, and Belinda S. Meier for their love, companionship, and support for Zack throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Ruth Herrick Palmer and Lee Frank Herrick, and paternal grandparents Opal and Russell Kays.
"He is one with the legends now."
