Woodrow Smith

Woodrow Wilson Smith, 94, of Topeka, passed away, Friday, March 7, 2008 at McCrite Plaza.

He was born May 5, 1913 in St. Clere, Kansas the son of Ira and Rosa Rezac Smith. He was a graduate of Emmett High School and attended Kansas State and Washburn Universities. He taught elementary schools in Pottawatomie, Jackson and Shawnee Counties in Kansas for 10 years.

During the teaching years in Shawnee County he worked for Safeway Stores and for American Ice Cream Company. He worked as a guard at Forbes Air Base while it was under construction.

He joined the Kansas Highway Patrol in 1942 and retired from that organization in 1963. He worked in Division I until the Kansas Turnpike opened where he worked until retirement.

From 1963 until 1980 he worked for the Motor Vehicle Division, Drivers License Examination Section, State of Kansas.

He worked part time as an insurance adjustor for Cimarron Insurance, Cimarron, Kansas, and did field work for the Soil Conservation Service, Shawnee County.

He was a long time member of Countryside United Methodist Church where he participated in various committees and contributed many hours of volunteer work. He was also a long time volunteer at Let's Help. He was a life time member of Topeka Lodge #17 AF & AM, Topeka, Kansas, and a life time member of the Order of the Eastern Star at Wakarusa, Kansas.

He was united in marriage to Emma Hill on January 14, 1939 in Topeka, Kansas. She preceded him in death September 5, 2006. Survivors include two daughters, Joan Baskett and husband Ferol, Berryton; Sally Boley and husband Roy, Topeka and Brownsville, TX; a son, W. Davis "Dave" Smith and wife, Catrina, San Diego, CA; and a son-in-law in Pahrump, NV; a brother, Roy Smith, Hoxie, KS; several grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as step-grandchildren, step-great grandchildren and step-great great grandchildren.

A daughter, Mary Ann Smith Riney and a grandson, Michael James Flott preceded him in death.
Cremation is planned.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00pmThursday, March 13, 2008 at Countryside United Methodist Church.
