Retired 1st/SGT Winfield Stuart "Bud" Shiflett, 91, Topeka, formerly of Junction City, passed away on Wednesday, November 14, 2007 at the Colmery-O'Neil VA Medical Center.
He was born on October 28, 1916 in Cedartown, GA, the son of Bert and Lenora (Tate) Shiflett.
Bud began his military career with the Georgia National Guard on November 25, 1940, retiring with the rank of First Sergeant from the U.S. Army after 22 years of service. He served in Austria, Germany and the Ascension Islands during World War II. Some of the many decorations and awards Bud received, include the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge and 7 Good Conduct Medals. He was later employed by the U.S. Postal Service in Junction City, retiring in 1983 after 17 years of service.
Bud married Elfriede "Billie" Gailer on November 10, 1949 in Linz, Austria. She preceded him in death on May 10, 1998. Survivors include a son; Michael S. Shiflett; two grandsons, Adam Shiflett, Matthew Shiflett; two granddaughters, Melissa Shiflett, Emily Linton; and three great granddaughters, all of Topeka. Bud was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters, and a grandson, Darren Shiflett.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 19, 2007 at Fort Riley Cemetery. Burial will follow. Bud will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. on Sunday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel and visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
