Wilma Irene (Werst) Freeman, 82, Topeka, passed away on Friday, July 13, 2012 at Midland Hospice House.
Wilma was born May 17, 1930 in Rock Creek, Kansas, the daughter of Christopher C. and Clara M. (Webster) Werst. She was raised in Rock Creek and Ozawkie, Kansas. She graduated in 1948 from Ozawkie High School. She worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone for 30 years before retiring in 1991. She was a member of the Southwestern Bell Pioneers, and Countryside United Methodist Church.
Wilma married William C. Freeman on June 4, 1955 in Topeka. She was a dedicated and loving wife to her husband, Bill, for over 56 years; a wonderful mother to Sheila A. Gropp, Topeka; sweet and loving grandmother to Christopher W. Gropp, Topeka; a cherished great-grandma to Hailey M. Mayer-Gropp. She was precedent in death by her husband Bill (April 7, 2012), her parents, her sisters: Zelma L. (Werst) Weber, Edgerton, OH, Fern E. (Werst) Collins, Muncie, IN, and her brother Donald D. Werst, Topeka, KS and many nephews and nieces. Wilma and Bill enjoyed traveling throughout the USA, bowling, bingo, camping and fishing, and playing games and visiting with their families.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 19, 2012 at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel. Burial will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, 3616 SW 6th Ave, Topeka. Wilma will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday and visitation will be from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
