Wilma A. Beatty, 76, Topeka, passed away on Saturday, May 28, 2005 at her home. Wilma was born June 16, 1928 in Topeka, the daughter of Chester Warren and Hazel Ethel Jones Blevins. She spent her childhood in Winchester, Paola, Emporia and Topeka. She graduated from the eighth grade in Paola. After raising her children she completed high school courses to receive her GED.
She was a Cub Scout den mother, Sunday school teacher and sang in the choir for many years as a member of Community Baptist Church and Terra Heights Baptist Church. Her work history ranged from being a fountain clerk for Walgreens, working as the head cook at the bus depot, working in health services for nursing homes and becoming one of the first Home Health Aides at the Shawnee County Health Department. She received a Distinguished Citizen award from the City of Topeka for saving the life of a patient from a smoke filled home. Wilma was a health care provider for over 50 years in Topeka and surrounding area. After her retirement she could be found at the Truitt Baptist Church camp in Haysville, NC working with children, camping, fishing, babysitting, traveling and visiting with family and friends. God, church, family and friends were of the most important part of her life.
Wilma married William J. Beatty on September 2, 1947 in Topeka. He preceded her in death in 1998. Two daughters, Ethel Faye Metcalf and Judy Lynn Combs and a sister Freida Blevins Amnott preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sons; William L. Beatty, Carbondale and David J. Beatty, Topeka; two daughters, Juanita L. Parker, Wakarusa and Edna H. Beatty, Topeka; 13 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren; and one sister Virginia L. Wood, Arcadia, FL.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, June 4, 2005 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Wilma will lie in state at the funeral home after 2:00 P.M. on Friday and visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M.
