Willis A. Anton, Jr.

Willis A. "Bill" Anton, Jr., 83, passed away peacefully on Sept. 14, 2010 at Brewster Health Center after a long illness. Bill was born Dec. 14, 1926, in Topeka, KS, the son of Willis A. and Edna Peppmeyer Anton and was a life long resident of Topeka.

He was a graduate of Topeka High and later studied business at Washburn University, where he joined Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He later served as President of the fraternity. During the war, Bill was accepted into Officer's Training Program for the Navy, where he became a lieutenant. After being stationed in Coronado Island, CA, and Japan, he returned to Topeka, and began working in the family canvas business, Topeka Tent & Awning, later becoming owner and president. Bill was a member of the First United Methodist Church and served on the board at Topeka Country Club. He served on the board at Shawnee County Mental Health Association, and was President of the Washburn Alumni Board. He also served on the board at Security Benefit and was especially proud to receive honors for his work with the Boy Scouts of America. Bill served as President of the Board at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center. Bill was an avid gardener and was a member of the Topeka Day Lilly Club. He had close to a hundred varieties of day lilies in his garden. He also enjoyed playing golf and tennis, and traveling. Bill and Bette had visited many European countries and Japan, always saying Japan was his favorite.

Survivors include his wife Bette; daughter, Libby (Bob) Anton-Reed; son, Christopher Anton; grandchildren, Shannon (Daryl) Mack, Robby Reed, Kimmy (Derek) Dick, Bryan, Lucy, and Ronnie Anton; and four great grandchildren.

A celebration of Bill's life will be held at the Brewster Place Main Parlor, 1205 SW 29th, Topeka, from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010. Private family inurnment will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Hospice, 3715 SW 29th Street Suite #100, Topeka, KS 66614, or a charity of choice. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is handling arrangements.
