William Schultz

William Schultz died Monday January 2, 2006 at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He died from ALS.
Mr. Schultz was a resident of Topeka, Kansas since 1948. He worked at the Topeka Veterans Hospital for many years and was a licensed mental Health Technician and a member of the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts.
His love for helping others was not limited to nursing care alone. He was active in animal care and welfare and was a member of many animal shelters including the largest no kill shelter in America "Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah." His love for all animals was endless. Over the years he has taken in many stray animals and found homes for them. He has helped other people find homes for stray animals. At times the only way he could help, because of his health, was with donations or advice to those in need. He had a great love for birds, many times using as much as 100 lbs of bird seed a month feeding them. The squirrels were in front of his house daily looking for peanuts that he fed them.
Mr. Schultz was also in Law Enforcement over 20 years. He was President and Chief of Security for Capital City Security Police. He was also a Special Deputy Sheriff and a Special Deputy Marshall many years.
Mr. William Schultz completed a tour of duty with the "First Allied Air Borne" and also with the "Air Borne Troup Carrier Command". He served in France, Germany, Belgium, Holland and Czechoslovakia and was in the European African Middle Eastern Campaign. He was listed as missing in action for three months after he and 29 other men were cut off and surrounded by the enemy behind German lines. Since this was a covert operation not even his family was aware of this. Of the 30 men with him only eight reached the American lines after weeks of effort and with the help of the 3rd Ranger Division and the Free French Underground Army. Upon his return he was awarded a citation from the French Government. After this secret mission into Germany he returned to the United States and was awarded an Honorable Discharge from the service.
He was a life member of the Philip Billard Post #1650 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Capitol Post #1 American Legion.
Mr. Schultz also managed the Drive In Theatres in Topeka for a long time, keeping him running from one job to the other. He kept this up until his health failed him.
He received his DD Degree, D.U.L., Masters and Ph.D. from Modesto California. He completed his doctor of D.E. at the University of Phoenix in Arizona.
