William S. "Bill" Belden, 86, of Lincoln, NE, formerly of Topeka, passed away Wednesday, December 26, 2012.
Bill was born on July 23, 1926 in Abilene, KS to Elliott S. and Johnny Belden. Bill leaves behind his wife, Carolyn Belden, Santa Barbara, CA, a son, Scott Belden and daughter-in-law Lisa Belden, Lincoln, NE; 3 grandsons- Brett Belden (Kayla), Jason Belden, and Ryan Belden and a great grandson Barrett Belden, all of Lincoln, NE; step-sons Robert Sutton and his wife Jo Ann, Santa Barbara, CA; Bill Sutton and his companion Mindy Meacham, Topeka, and Steve Sutton and his wife Marla, Kansas City, MO; a sister Barbara Miller and brother-in-law Keith "Bing" Miller of Eskridge, KS. Bill was preceded in death by his first wife Betty B. (Ellis) Belden in 1978.
Bill grew up in Eskridge, KS and graduated from Eskridge High School in 1940. He enlisted in the Navy in 1944 and served as a Pharmacists Mate Third Class until receiving his Honorable Discharge in 1946. After the Navy, Bill attended the University of Kansas and was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1949.
After graduating from college, Bill began a career in life insurance with Franklin Life Insurance Co. of Springfield, IL. He reached the level of Regional Manager and retired in 1993 after a 47 year career, all with Franklin. Bill was the recipient of many sales awards during his distinguished career at Franklin including the Key Club, the 60 Club, and the Franklin Million Dollar Conference. Bill was also past President of the Topeka Association of Life Underwriters. Bill has been a longtime member of the Arab Shrine Temple, Grand Lodge of A.F. & A.M. of Kansas, the American Legion, and the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels.
Bill and Carolyn spent their retirement years living in Santa Barbara, Ca. The last year of Bill's life was spent in Lincoln, Ne. where his son Scott and daughter-in-law Lisa managed his care. They wish to personally thank the staff of The Landing and Tabitha's Good House for the loving care provided to Bill during his time in Lincoln.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, December 31, 2012 at the Mount Hope Cemetery Chapel in Topeka. Private family entombment will follow at Mt. Hope Mausoleum. Bill will lie in state and the family will greet friends from 3 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Sunday at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Avenue Topeka.
