William R. Grier, 86, of Topeka, passed away Tuesday, May 2 at Aldersgate Village.
He was born December 9, 1920 in Coffeyville, Kansas, the son of James R. and Florence Johnson Grier.
After graduating from Coffeyville High School, he attended Wichita State University. In 1941, he entered the military and served in the Combat Medical Corps in Africa and the South Pacific. After his military service, he returned to Wichita State University and received his bachelor's degree in Science and Business Administration. He was employed by the State of Kansas as a accountant in the Dept. of Revenue. He enjoyed traveling and was an avid bridge player.
He married Lydia H. Weeder. They later divorced. He married Ione Young in 1972. She preceded him in death in November, 2005. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Al Grier.
Survivors include two sons; William R. Grier Jr.and Debra Lynn Hughes of Kapaa, HI, Timothy W. Grier of Forest Lakes, AZ; a daughter Marcia S. Jeglum and her husband John F. Jeglum of West Linn, OR; two grandchildren, Rachel and Joseph Grier; a brother, James R. Grier, Wichita, KS; two step-daughters, Susan Spage and her husband Bill of rural Virginia, Gwen Murphy, Plano, TX and numerous step grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mr. Grier was cremated. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 6, in Wesley Hall at Aldersgate Village.
