William Henry "Hank" Lumpkin, 38, Topeka, died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2003 at a Topeka hospital.
He was born Feb. 1, 1965 in Topeka, the son of Joseph H. and Penny Palmer Lumpkin. He attended Fountain Valley High School in Colorado Springs, and graduated from Topeka West High School in 1983. Following high school he attended the University of Kansas.
Hank worked for The Palmer Companies and was the book buyer. He helped found and operate Boss Hawg's Barbeque & Catering in 1995 as a catering business and later opened a restaurant in Brookwood Shopping Center in 1997. His restaurant became known nationwide, after it was named one of the 10 best barbecue restaurants in the country. In July, he opened Pigskin's, a sports bar adjacent to the restaurant.
He was a member of the Kansas City Barbecue Society, and in 2001, won the Jack Daniels Brisket World Championship. He was, many times, Northeast Kansas Barbecue Champion. He also was the Missouri and Kansas State Barbecue Champion. He was a member of the 20-30 Club and Topeka Country Club. He also helped found Boss Hawg Giving Fund at the Topeka Community Foundation. He was an Eagle Scout and was a varsity tennis player in High School.
He married Elizabeth Suzanne Nice on Sept. 18, 1993 in Topeka. Hank was her husband and best friend. They were to celebrate 10 years together next month.
Other survivors include his parents, Joe and Penny Lumpkin of Topeka; sister, Kelley Goodwin, Topeka; nephew, Grayson Palmer Goodwin and 2 nieces, Madison Collins Goodwin and Hartley Wells Goodwin; aunt & uncle, Polly Palmer & James Lee Brunkhardt of Mission Hills; aunt, Susan Lumpkin Burdick of York Harbor, ME; cousins, William James Brunkhardt, Westwood Hills and Benjamin Palmer Brunkhardt, Los Angeles. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, William Hopkins and Vivian J. Palmer and paternal grandparents, Joseph Henry, Sr and Susy Belle Lumpkin. He will be deeply missed by his beloved companions, Parsley, Scooter, and Dru.
Services will be 2:00 pm Sunday at Grace Episcopal Cathedral. Entombment will be in Mt. Hope Mausoleum.
Hank will lie in state after noon Friday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel.
