William "Bill" Lay, 88, of Warsaw, MO, formerly of Topeka, passed away on Thursday, December 27, 2012 at Midland Hospice House in Topeka. He was born July 8, 1924 in Dearborn, MO, the son of Bessie Lay.
Bill was an Army combat veteran of WWII, serving in the Service Division of the 14th Armored Service Company for three years. He served in France and Germany where he received the Bronze Star, two Battle Stars and one Infantry Combat Badge. He was discharged on January 6, 1946.
Bill worked in the construction field from 1951 until his retirement as a Construction Superintendent in 1992. He built many homes and businesses in Topeka as well as high rises in different states. He was a member of Carpenters Local Union No. 1445 in Topeka.
Bill married Ruby Roberson in 1942. They were divorced. In April, 1971, he was married to Carol Tatum. They made their home in Topeka and Warsaw. She survives. Other survivors include four children, Billie D. Lay, O'Rita Paige, Debbie (Wayne) Belveal, Sherrie (Ron) Reeves, two step-children, Patricia (Don) Schultz and Marjorie (Mike) Smith, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Bill's greatest joys were his family, hunting in Kansas and fishing on the Lake of the Ozarks, where he lived for 19 years.
Bill accepted Jesus as his Savior in 1989 at the Wanamaker Road Baptist Church. He was currently a member of Warsaw First Southern Baptist Church. He loved Jesus.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Faith Lutheran Church. Private inurnment will take place at a later date. Memorial contributions may be given to Midland Care Hospice Services, 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is assisting the family.
