Wilbur E. Levering

Wilbur E. Levering, 89, of Topeka, passed away Monday, May 2, 2011.

Wilbur was born April 27, 1922, in LeRoy, KS, son of Charles and Anna (Cokeley) Levering. He graduated from Kansas State University with a BS in Agriculture Economics and from the University of Wisconsin with a MA in Banking. Wilbur served as a Captain in the US Army during WWII in the European theatre.

He was united in marriage to Ina Mae Vesey on March 4, 1950, in Topeka.

Wilbur worked as an Agricultural Extension Agent for Elk & Shawnee Counties for five years, a Farm Broadcaster for WIBW-Radio & WIBW-TV for 12 years, and an Agricultural Lending Officer for Merchants National Bank and Peoples State Bank for 22 years in Topeka. While Wilbur was in banking, he served as Sr. Vice President at Merchants National Bank and President of Peoples State Bank. Following retirement in 1987, he pursued his love of farming, hunting, fishing, and lawn mowing.

Wilbur was a lifelong participant in 4-H club activities and received the Leadership Award at the National 4-H conference in Chicago in 1941. He was active in county and state fairs, and livestock and crop judging at KSU. The College of Agriculture at KSU recognized Wilbur in 1976 with a Distinguished Agriculture Alumnus Award. Wilbur served as Trustee of the Kansas 4-H Foundation for the past 28 years. Wilbur and Ina Mae were members of Seabrook Congregational Church and First Congregational Church, Topeka.

Wilbur is survived by his wife Ina Mae Levering, son, Dale Wayne Levering, daughter in law, Dina M. (Weidler) Levering, two grandsons, Isaac Craig Levering and Silas Spencer Levering, and daughter Debra Ann Levering.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Anna Combs and Dorothy French, and a brother, Louie Levering.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 10, 2011, at First Congregational Church, 1701 SW Collins Ave., Topeka. Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Gardens, Topeka. Wilbur will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 9, 2011, at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to KSU Foundation, 2323 Anderson Ave., Suite 500, Manhattan, KS 66502-2911, or Kansas 4-H Foundation, 116 Umberger Hall, Manhattan, KS 66506-3417.
