Wendell Victor Strom, 86, Topeka, went to his heavenly home on Tuesday, September 9, 2008.
He was born July 26, 1922 in Clifton, the son of Victor and Ellen (Loberg) Strom. He graduated from Clay County Community High School in 1940. After graduation, Wendell entered the U.S. Army in 1942. He was stationed at Camp Carson, Colorado until he went overseas in 1943. He served in England, France and Germany in Eisenhower's headquarters. He was discharged and returned home in December, 1945.
Wendell spent the remainder of his life in Topeka, working with Hussey & Hussey Insurance and later with Trinity Universal. He was an active member of the Downtown Kiwanis, serving as President and Board Member. He had 50 years of perfect attendance. He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, serving as Sunday School Superintendent for 17 years. Wendell has also been a life long Kansas Jayhawk fan, with season tickets for both football and basketball since the early 1950's.
Wendell married Dorothy Wiberg on January 25, 1944 in Colorado Springs. She survives. Other survivors include daughters, Marilyn Petr, Overland Park, Karen Fitzherbert and husband Bill, Olathe; son, Greg Strom and wife Donna, Corinth, TX; brother, Wilbur Strom and wife Thelma, Leavenworth; sister, Maxine Habluetzel and husband Lawrence, Clay Center; six grandchildren; and one great granddaughter.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 12, 2008 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. Burial with military honors will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Wendell will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel after 2:00 p.m. today and visitation will be from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.
