Wayne A. Sanders, 79, Topeka, passed away on Sunday, November 18, 2007.
Wayne was born April 14, 1928 in Topeka, the son of Frank and
Elizabeth (Mayer) Sanders. He graduated from Washburn University with
a Master's Degree in Education. Wayne served in the United States
Navy. He taught in the Topeka USD-501 School System for over 30 years,
retiring in 1990. He taught for most of his career at State Street
Elementary School and was a long time basketball coach for Chase
Middle School. Wayne loved bowling and was a youth coach for many
years. He was inducted into the Topeka and the State Bowler's Hall of Fame.
Wayne was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and a friend to all who knew him. Wayne married Florine M. Wanstrath on August 25, 1951. She survives. Other survivors include daughters; Mary Bunn and husband, Jim, Topeka, Linda Sanders and husband, Larry Wheeler, Houston, TX, Amy Hartrey and husband, Tim, Brighton, MI and 6 grandchildren; Bryan Bunn, Alex Bunn, Lindsey Hartrey, Duncan Hartrey, Erik Wheeler and Alex Wheeler. He was preceded in death by a sister; Peggy Criger. He was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 23, 2007 at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Wayne will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel after 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday and visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church or Midland Hospice Care.
