Wayne E. Pence, Jr, 53, of Topeka, passed away Saturday, January 9, 2021 due to complications from Covid-19.
Wayne was a goofy, smart, hardworking man. He was born June 9, 1967, in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Wayne and Jeanne (Oyler) Pence. He graduated from Highland Park High School in 1985 and went on to obtain his Bachelors in Biology from Washburn University in 1994. He later continued his education, getting his Master's Degree in Business Administration from Baker University in 2000.
Traditions were important to Wayne. The holidays were filled with many traditions and family recipes that he enjoyed spending time participating in and passing down to family. Wayne's favorite holiday was Christmas. He went all out decorating his house, both on the inside and out. Each Christmas, he would make chocolate covered pretzels and candies called haystacks. Every year on New Year's Eve, he continued the family tradition of making his grandmother's Grouchstrudel recipe.
During his free time, Wayne enjoyed working out, lifting the weights he got from his parents when he was young. He also built several computers throughout his lifetime, a skill he taught himself. He collected comic books (Wolverine and Batman were a couple of his favorites), and he loved anything and everything Star Wars. He liked to take road trips and had dreams to travel the world, especially Europe. He loved listening to music, especially hard Rock N' Roll and 80s. He had boxes full of records and CDs. He also enjoyed playing games: classic arcade games when he was younger, and computer/playstation games as he grew older.
Wayne also had an interest in botany. For many years he grew his own garden; growing mainly vegetables such as tomatoes, jalapeños, and corn. He also enjoyed baking and cooking. He would bake things such as zucchini bread, banana bread, cookies, and brownies. He definitely had a sweet tooth. He also loved hosting cookouts; grilling hot dogs and hamburgers. Family was extremely important to him. The bond that he shared with his family, especially his parents, was strong.
He attended Christ Lutheran Church in Topeka, KS and Christ Lutheran Church in Overland Park, KS. He was a volunteer with the Overland Park Church. One example was he would help create and control the audio and video projections of the church service on the big screen.
He is survived by his mother, Jeanne Pence; his ex-wife, Lisa Pence and their children, Elizabeth Pence, Ryan Pence, and Laura Pence; his sisters, Lavon (Mike) Weimer, and Jeanette Benson; nieces and nephews, Jordan, Demetri Jr, Malachi, and Maliah; several cousins on both the Pence and Oyler side. He was preceded in death by his father, Wayne Eugene Pence, Sr. on January 4, 2021 due to complications from Covid-19.
Private services will be held.
