Wayne E. Hundley, 83, of Topeka, succumbed to cancer on Wednesday, October 1, 2014.
He was born April 19, 1931 in Lowemont, KS, the son of George Vernor "Vern" and Esther Mae (Roach) Hundley. Wayne attended school in Atchison and Oskaloosa, continuing his education at University of Kansas where he played trumpet in the K.U. band. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After completing basic training in Hawaii, he was attached to an anti-aircraft artillery unit near Chicago, he continued serving in the Army reserves, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. Wayne graduated Washburn University and Washburn University School of Law and was admitted to practice in 1959. After practicing on his own for many years, he joined the Kansas Attorney General's Office under Robert Stephan as head of the Consumer Protection and Antitrust Divisions and was Chief Deputy Attorney General. He was a Municipal Judge in Paxico, KS and a Judge Pro Tempore for the City of Topeka's Sunflower ASAP Program for over 35 years. He also served on numerous board and committees.
Wayne was instrumental in starting the State Wide Assistance Program for Lawyers under the Kansas Bar Association. He was then successful in working with the Kansas Supreme Court to adopt a state approved program which is currently known as the Kansas Lawyers Assistance Program (KALAP). He was the first chairperson of this Commission.
He was a proud and active member of Alcoholics Anonymous for over forty two years and was a member of Al-Anon. He served on the Kansas Citizen's Committee and SARP. The number of people he helped throughout the years is innumerable.
Wayne married Ann Biery in Oskaloosa, KS. They were later divorced but remained friends for the rest of his life. Other survivors include three children, David Hundley, Steven (Lisa) Hundley and Brynn Mroz; two grandchildren, Philip and Jayce, all of Topeka; and a sister Verna (Robert) Pierson.
Honoring his request, Wayne was cremated. A celebration of life service will be 3:30 p.m., Saturday, October 11, 2014 at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka. The family will receive friends immediately following at the Christ Lutheran Church, 3509 SW Burlingame, Topeka.
