Ward Lee Ward, 72, of Topeka, passed away on Thursday, November 3, 2011 at Aldersgate Village in Topeka. He was born September 16, 1939 in Burr Oak, KS, the son of George T. and Mary A. Rothers Ward.
He graduated from Topeka High School in 1958 and attended Washburn University. Ward was a Navy veteran, serving from 1958-1966. He was employed as fireman for the City of Topeka for 28 years before retiring at the rank of Captain. He was a member of the Topeka Firefighters IAFF Local No. 83.
Ward married Rhoda Pool on February 13, 1967 in Topeka. They were divorced. Ward married Carol L. Stevenson on December 4, 1993 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Suzanne Duckworth of Topeka, Angie Howard of Lawrence and a step-daughter, Amy Quiett of Topeka, nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, his mother, Mary A. Ward of Topeka and his sister, Janet Asbury of Tumwater, WA. He was preceded in death by his brother, Gene Ward.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel where Last Bell Services will be presented by the Topeka Fire Department Local No. 83 Honor Guard and Military Honors will be presented by a Navy Burial Detail from Kansas City, MO. Cremation will follow the service and private inurnment will take place at a later date. Ward will lie in state from 1:00 – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
