Wanda May Vinson
Wanda May Vinson, 87, formerly of Topeka, died Saturday, January 10, 2004 at the Norton (KS) County Hospital.
She was born on November 25, 1916 in Kansas City, MO the daughter of Clarence C. and Maybelle S. Ludington Vinson. She is a graduate of Shawnee Mission High School, received a Pre Law Degree from Baker University and her Masters Degree from the University of Kansas.
Miss Vinson was a former Social Studies teacher at Wellsville, Wellington and WichitaEast High Schools and served as the Principal at Antioch Grade School in Shawnee Mission. For 36 years she served as an Administrative Assistant with the Kansas State High School Activities Association, where she founded and directed the Kansas Association for Youth (Kays / Kayettes), a state-wide student leadership, service organization. For the past 46 years, a scholarship in her honor has provided more than $55,000 in scholarships for KAY student leaders.
Among her many honors are: Honorary Doctorate Degree from Baker University; Shawnee Mission-North High School Honorary Alumni; KSHSAA Governor's Award for Outstanding contributions to Secondary Education; Kansas Teacher's Hall of Fame; Kansas State High School Activities Association Hall of Fame. Honor Societies include: Pi Kappa Delta; Pi Lambda Theta; Cardinal Key National Honor Society. Offices held include: National President of Baker University Alumni Association; Baker University Board of Trustees and Executive Board; State President of Kansas Women Administrators; State Vice President of Delta Kappa Gamma.
Miss Vinson was a 50 year member of the First United Methodist Church, Topeka. She was an active member of the Almena Study Club and United Methodist Women.
Surviving is a sister, Henrietta Vinson-Goodman, Napa, CA.
Services will be at 1:30 pm Wednesday, January 14, 2004 in Klasse Chapel of the First United Methodist Church, Topeka. Burial will be follow in Mount Hope Cemetery, Topeka. Miss Vinson will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Midtown Chapel from noon to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 13, 2004.
