Walter L. "Bud" Simons, 78, of Topeka, passed away, Saturday, January 1, 2005 at St. Francis Hospital.
He was born May 20, 1926 in Manhattan, Kansas the son of Walter J. and Elizabeth Hohn Simons.
Bud was a military veteran serving in the United States Navy during the Korean War.
He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, Carpenters Local #1445, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #555, Philip Billard Post #1650 Veterans of Foreign Wars and North Post #400 American Legion. He was also a member of many hunting and fishing groups.
He married Ila June Specht December 20, 1952. She preceded him in death October 21, 1989. Survivors include: his special friend, Elvera Gehrt, Alma, KS; two brothers, Robert Simons, Topeka; James and wife Rosemary , Topeka; five sisters, Anna Marie Mayer, North Vernon, IN; Katy Morris, Fremont, NE; Jessie Russell and husband John, Topeka; Eleanor Slusser and husband Gordon, Topeka; Alice Bauer and husband Al, Glendale, AZ and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister Peggy Heptig.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00am Thursday January 6, 2005 at Holy Name Catholic Church, 1114 SW 10th Avenue. Burial with full military honors will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Mr. Simons will lie in state after 12:00 noon Wednesday at the Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel where a rosary will be recited at 7:00pm Wednesday. The family will greet friends until 8:30 p.m. following the Rosary. Memorial contributions may be sent to the funeral home in care of the family for a fund to be designated at a later time.
