Walter Painter

Walter G. Painter, 74, of Sabetha, passed away Wednesday, October 5 at the Sabetha Community Hospital.

He was born June 12, 1931 in Iowa Point, Kansas, the son of Ernest J. and Alpha M. Cunningham Painter.

He was a 1949 graduate of Morrill High School in Morrill, Kansas. After high school, he went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad until 1953, when he was drafted into the Army, where he served for several years before being honorably discharged in 1955. He went to work for the City of Sabetha as a lineman, starting in1956. He then went to work at the Sabetha Power Plant where he worked until retirement in 1996. After retirement, he worked as a groundskeeper at the Albany Museum, located north of Sabetha. He was an avid coin collector and enjoyed giving tours through the museum.

He married Rosalie Smith in March 1952. They divorced. He later married Ruth O. Alderfer. They also divorced. He was preceded in death by a sister, Naomi Hartshorn and a brother, Lester Painter.

Survivors include two sons, Zane M. Painter and his wife Nancy, Sabetha and James E. Painter and his fiance Jan, Sabetha; one daughter, Patti J. Harmon, Auburn, Kansas; five grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren ; Two Step-sons, Kenny Alderfer and his wife Cindy, and their children, Ashley, Jessica and Tyanna, Sabetha, Step-son John Alderfer, Sabetha; ; one brother, Phil Painter and his wife Aris, Boring, Oregon; two sisters, June Currie, Perry, Kansas and Sylvia Lankard and her husband Carl, Fordland, Missouri.

Cremation is planned. Services will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to The American Heart Association or The Albany Historical Society, sent in care of United Bank, P.O. Box E, 935 Main, Sabetha, KS 66534.
