Walter G. Jantzen, 93, of Topeka, passed away Monday, December 12 at Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center.
He was born July 17, 1912 in Inman, Kansas, the son of Herman P. and Agnetha Unruh Jantzen. He graduated from Newton High School and attended Bethel College.
Mr. Jantzen worked at the Goerz Flour Mill in Newton while attending Bethel College, and later worked at the cereal lab at Goerz. He starting to work at the Lindsborg Flour Mill Lab in 1946 and later transferred to the office as office manager. After that company was purchased by Seaboard Allied Flour Milling Company in 1954, he transferred to Topeka where he worked until retiring in 1975.
Mr. Jantzen was a member of Lowman United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir, was a Lowman server, and a member of the Fellowship Sunday School class. He was a Rotarian and a member of the City Council while in Lindsborg. In Topeka, Mr. Jantzen and his wife delivered Meals on Wheels for 21 years. He volunteered at Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center as a red coat and also installed Lifelines. He was a VITA tax preparer, an accomplished woodworker, and a loving father and grandfather.
He married Hulda Dyck on May 26, 1934 in Moundridge, Kansas. She preceded him in death on June 17, 2002.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Argell and Margaret Jantzen, Topeka, his sister, Martha L. Voth, Newton, three grandchildren and families, John A. Jantzen and children, David and Cassity, Chrystal A. Garrett and husband, Mark, and their children, Courtney and Nicholas, Cory A. Jantzen and wife, Katrina, and their daughter, Kyra, all of Topeka.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Friday at Lowman United Methodist Church with interment in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Mr. Jantzen will lie in state after noon Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel where the family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m.
