Walter F. Hines, 98, Topeka, passed away May 10, 2012. He was born February 23, 1914, in Ashland, KS, the son of Frederick W. and Hilda O. Nelson Hines. Walter attended schools and graduated from Ashland High School. He later earned his BS degree from Kansas State College in Manhattan, KS, and his Master's degree in history and political science from Colorado University in Boulder, CO.
On May 28, 1939, in Salina, he married Rachel Marie Donabauer. She preceded him in death on March 17, 2012. Walter spent most of his life as an educator, teaching history and government at Beloit High School and teaching night school and summer classes in history and education at Washburn University.
Walter was principle at Highland Park High School, Joy Shideler Junior High School, and Pauline South Elementary School. Later he served as district manager for K.T. Martin & Co. handling sales and adjustment of losses in crop and hail insurance. Walter was a 25-year member of the Topeka Lion's Club, life member of KNEA (Kansas National Education Association) and Kansas Athletic Association, and was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Topeka.
Walter is survived by daughter, Deborah L. (William R.) Norman of Kansas City, MO; son, Donald W. (Susan) Hines of Ellsworth, KS; grandsons, Christopher and Michael Norman; and great grandchildren, Hannah and Jack Norman, all of Kansas City, MO.
Mr. Hines was cremated and a memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 14, 2012, at McCrite Plaza in Topeka. Inurnment will take place at a later date in the Highland Cemetery in Ashland, KS.
