Mr. Walter L. Douglas, 79, of Topeka passed away Saturday Feb. 14, 2004 at a local hospital. He was born in San Bernardino, CA on March 16, 1924 to Vern and Fern Johnston Douglas.
Walter was a 1947 graduate of Topeka High School. He served in the United States Navy from March 1943 to Nov. 1945. Having served in the Pacific Theater, he was aboard the USS Greenwood. While on active duty Walt was awarded the Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation 1 Star, Asiatic-Pacific 2 stars and American Area Ribbon.
After 37 years of service Walt retired from the United States Postal Service in 1984. He had been a letter carrier, an active union member and former union steward. Other activities included membership in the American Legion Post 400 and V.F.W. Post 1650.
On Aug. 14, 1982 he married Beverly Grady; she survives and lives in Topeka. Walter is also survived by his daughter Debbie Lang of Topeka, his son Denis Douglas of Topeka and son David Douglas of Olympia, WA, two stepsons Russell and Rickey Wisehart both of Kansas City, five grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
Mr. Douglas will lie in state on Tuesday Feb. 17, 2004 in Penwell-Gabel Mid Town beginning at Noon, the family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004 at 11:00 am in the funeral home chapel.
Cremation will follow.
