W. Walter Russell

W.Walter Russell, 91, Topeka, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, October 15, 2002, at a local hospital.

He was born December 20, 1910, at Pittsburg, Kansas, the son of Archibald and Grace Owings Russell.

Mr. Russell was a graduate of Pittsburg State University and received a Master of Arts Degree with a major in school administration at the University of Kansas.

Mr. Russell was Director of Continuing Education for U.S.D. # 501 for 25 years. He retired in 1976. He taught at Burlington and Lawrence, Kansas before coming to Topeka High School in 1946.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. He was President of the Lawrence Teachers Association, Topeka Teachers Association and the Kansas State Adult Education Association. He was Vice-President of the Kansas State Teachers Association. He was a life member of the National Education Association, K-NEA, and Phi Delta Kappa, honorary education fraternity. He was past president of the Downtown Kiwanis Club and a life member of Lawrence Masonic Acacia Lodge No. 9 A.F. & A. M. He was a member of the Topeka American Legion Capitol Post No. 1 and the Knife and Fork Club.

Mr. Russell was inducted into the Army at Fort Leavenworth where he served as an instructor in the Special Training Unit. He later attended the Officer's Candidate School at Camp Lee, Virginia where he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Quartermaster Corp. After graduation he was attatched to the Procurement Department of the Kansas City Quartermaster Depot.

He married Donis Ellen McDermond on September 7, 1947, at Lawrence, Kansas. She survives.

Other survivors include a daughter Carol Jean Mallory, Overland Park, Kansas; a son, Dean Alan Russell, Los Angelas, California, and four grandchildren.

A private family graveside service will be at Mount Hope Cemetery. A memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 18, 2002, at First Presbyterian Church in Topeka, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be given to First Presbyterian Church 812 SW Topeka Blvd. Topeka, Kansas 66612-1610.
