Virginia Swenson

Virginia Swenson, age 91, Topeka, went to her Lord peacefully at home on January 16, 2011. She was born November 6, 1919, in Topeka, Kansas, the daughter of George and Daisy Wetzel Henney. Virginia graduated from Topeka High School in 1938 and attended Washburn College. She went to work for the Santa Fe Railway.

She married Chester Norman Fox May 16, 1942 in Topeka and joined him at Mitchell Field, Long Island, New York during WW2. He died May 14, 1972. Virginia married R. G. Swede Swenson on October 19, 1973, Topeka. He survives. She was preceded in death by grandson, Sean Galton.

Other survivors are her daughter Charlotte Ann Fox Galton (Kit), son Robert William Fox (Susan), stepchildren Debbie Davis (Steven), Mike Swenson (Charneil), Scott Blaine Swenson, two grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and five step-great grandchildren.


Virginia was a member of the First Congregational Church and served as Chairman of the Deaconess and Personnel Committees. She was a lifetime member of the Zeta Tau Alpha National Sorority, a Charter Member and Past Regent of John Haupt Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, past Chairman of Several KSDAR Committees, and Vice Chairman of a National Committee. She was also a member of the Topeka High School Historical Society.


Mrs. Swenson was cremated and a memorial service will be held at First Congregational Church on Thursday, January 20, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. Memorials may be made to Women's Fellowship, First Congregational Church, 1701 SW Collins St., Topeka, Kansas 66604 or to Hospice Care of Kansas, 2900 SW 29th St., Topeka, Kansas 66614. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
