Virginia "Ginny" Somers, 89, of Topeka, passed away on October 23, 2018.
She was born on March 29, 1929 in Hamlin, WV the daughter of Charles and Lula Mae Young. She graduated from Hamlin High School in 1947 and went on to attend Marshall University.
She married Charles W. Somers on December 24, 1949 in Huntington, WV. He survives.
Other survivors include children, Charles W. Somers, Jr. and his wife Patty, and Susan L. Somers; siblings, Joy L. Gloer and Michael K. Young; grandson, Brian E. Diggs; great-grandchildren, Michael, Nicolas, and Braden.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Jo Taylor, Charles E. Young, Jr., and Mary Hazlett.
Virginia retired after 30 years of service from the Veterans Administration Hospital. Following her retirement, she volunteered for several years at the Old Prairie Town at Ward-Meade Historic Site and at the First Baptist Church.
She enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends. She was able to visit every state except for Alaska and North Dakota.
The family will greet friends during a visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 26, 2018 in the Mount Hope Cemetery Chapel, 17th & Fairlawn. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. Entombment will follow in the Mausoleum.
