Virginia Schrenk

Virginia Florine Flory Schrenk, 78, Topeka, died Tuesday, July 19, 2005, the birthday of her oldest son, at Midland Hospice House.

She was born Jan. 17, 1927 in Topeka, the oldest child of James E., Sr. and Grace A. Barncord Flory. She lived most of her life in the Oakland community. She attended State Street Grade School, Holiday Jr. High, and graduated from Topeka High School in 1945.

As a young girl, she worked at Riddle Grocery Store and Patsels Greenhouse. She later worked at the Topeka Supply Depot, the Army Ordinance Shop and John Morrell's Meat Packing Company.

She married Kermit C. Schrenk on Aug. 14, 1949, while both were working in the Bacon Slice Department at Morrells. The plant closed in 1951 due to the flood, at which time she stayed home and raised four children. She later went to work for the State of Kansas Department of Revenue, retiring in 1987.

She was a member of the Topeka Regional Antique Auto Club of America, the Lawrence Region of the AACA, the Golden Spokes Car Club of Topeka, the Sunflower Region of CHVA, the Lucky 7 Camping Club, Good Sam Camping Club, Papan's Landing Senior Center of North Topeka, and Grace United Methodist Church. She helped organize the first Holiday Jr. High School Reunion along with Vina Jean Johnson and Robert Johnston, helping with the trolley rides.

Virginia is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Kermit, Sr., of the home; two sons, K.C. Schrenk, Jr. and his wife, Diana, Michael J. Schrenk; two daughters, Cynthia L. Langford and husband, Terrance, Tammy L. Schmidtberger, all of Topeka; five grandchildren, Clint E. Schrenk, Kimberly K. Langford, Arin C. Langford, Shannon L. Schmidtberger Hubbard and husband, Camdon, Stacie M. Schmidtberger, all of Topeka; two step-grandsons, Cory L. Langford, Salina, T. Ryan Langford, Cortez, CO; one great-grandson, Caimon Gifford; two brothers, James E. Flory, Jr. and wife, Barbara, John C. Flory and wife, Mary Jean; two sisters, Grace A. Flory, E. Louise Johnson and husband, Ernest, all of Topeka; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her youngest sister, Helen M. Swaim and husband Richard of Silver Lake, and several nephews.

Services will be 10:00 am Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church with interment in Penwell-Gabel's Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Schrenk will lie in state after 9:00 am Friday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7-8:30 pm.
