Virginia Porterfield

Virginia Porterfield,92, Topeka, passed away early Tuesday, September 15th, 2015, with family at her side and her sense of humor and unbridled love for her family and friends firmly intact.

Virginia was born to Glen and Grace (Beach) Loveland on August 25, 1923 in Eskridge, as a fourth-generation Wabaunsee Countian.

Following her graduation from Eskridge Rural High School, she was employed in Eskridge at the local electric utility company before moving to Topeka to work for the Kansas Power and Light, where she met Brooke Everett Porterfield, an Air Force bombardier stationed at Forbes from Athens, Ga. They later married on December 15, 1945 in Eskridge. He died on April 15th, 1997. Together they started Porterfield's Flowers and Gifts in 1965 where she managed the office for many years.

She was active in the business community locally as well as several regional and national florist organizations. She was also a member of First Congregational Church for 60-plus years where she was active in the Sunday School music program and assisted with many of its charity fundraisers. She was an avid gardener and loved bridge, especially with her Tuesday club with whom she played for well over 50 years.

Surviving are son David Porterfield and his partner Lee Glaze of Topeka, daughter Ruth Ann Schuman of Colorado Springs, grandchildren Hilary Porterfield of Basalt, Co., Jay Schuman of Phoenix. Az, and Amanda King of Hinesville, Ga, along with three great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at First Congregational Church, 1701 SW Collins at 11:00AM Saturday. Private family inurnment at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Congregational Church.
