Virginia L. Poland, 80, of Topeka, died Tuesday, September 21, 2004 at a local hospital.
She was born on December 26, 1923 in Crowder, OK, the daughter of Andrew Jackson Mote and Nell Nevada Mote. She attended schools in Topeka, Abilene and graduated from Manhattan High School. On ecember 1, 1946, she married Captain Claude A. Poland. He predeceased her in 1951. After raising two children, she attened and graduated from Washburn University with honors. She was a member of Phi Kappa Phi. She served Topeka in a variety of volunteer positions, inlcuding Grey Lady Chairman for the American Red Cross; Cub Scout Den Mother; a longtime leader in the Girl Scouts of America and PTA Board member; she taught English as a second language at Washburn University and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
A son, Mark A. Poland predeceased her. She is survived by her daughter, Anne Poland Page, Topeka, granddaughters Elizabeth Barber, Round Rock, TX, and Sarah Page, Lawrence and by two great granddaughters, Alexandria Barber and Haley Barber, Round Rock, TX and a sister, Nadine M. Colt, Banning, CA.
