Virginia H. Nordstrom, 84, Topeka, died Thursday, March 29, 2007 at Stormont-Vail hospital.
She was born October 2, 1922, the daughter of Arthur and Ruth Hamm of Oskaloosa. At the age of 2, she moved with her family to Topeka where she was educated in public schools, graduating from Topeka High in 1940.
Virginia worked for a number of automobile agencies before becoming a claims secretary for State Farm Insurance Company. She continued in this employment until 1943.
On April 2, 1943, she married Carl C. Nordstrom of Topeka. As a war bride, Mrs. Nordstrom lived in San Francisco, Long Beach, and Seattle before returning to Topeka.
She was a long-time member of Euclid Methodist Church and later its successor University United Methodist Church. She served as a member of the chancel choir, church school teacher, president of United Methodist Women, and with her husband, as a sponsor of the youth fellowship for 40 years. Most recently, she served as chair of the Memorials Committee.
Beyond her church work, she for many years was on the Board and on Programs and Services of the United Methodist Homes. Mrs. Nordstrom was most active in helping to plan and bring into being Aldersgate Village and is known for having named this institution. She was also active in Church Women United and supported many charitable agencies.
Mrs Nordstrom is survived by her husband, Carl; two daughters, Carla Hearrell and husband, Randy, and Mary Foster; a son, Mark Nordstrom and wife, Dona, all of Topeka; five grandsons; one granddaughter; and four great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 1, 2007 at University United Methodist Church in Topeka. Mrs. Nordstrom will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel after 2:00 p.m. on Saturday and visitation will be from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 2, 2007 at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery.
