Virginia A. Mellenbruch, 88, of Topeka, passed away on Thursday, March 4, 2010 at Midland Hospice House in Topeka. She was born on August 31, 1921 in Lecompton, KS, the daughter of Ermal L. and Victoria M. Boyce Mellenbruch.
She lived most of her life in the Topeka community. She graduated from Topeka High School in 1938. Virginia received a BE Degree from Emporia State University in 1951 and a Masters Degree from Washburn University in 1964. She was an elementary school teacher for 45 years, teaching in Cloud Co., Shawnee Co., Jefferson Co., Minneapolis, KS, Wyandotte Co., KS and Cheyenne, WY before retiring in 1986. Virginia was a member of First Lutheran Church and the Betta Sigma Phi Sorority.
Survivors include one sister, Doris W. Peterson of Topeka, several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Lenora M. Swearingen and Carolyn B. Everly.
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Burial will follow in Osage City Cemetery. Virginia will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
