Virgil D. Wieland, 82, of Topeka, passed away on Thursday, December14, 2006 at a Topeka hospital. He was born on January 31, 1924 the son of Edward O. and Rhoda Shanks Wieland. He grew up and attended public schools in Reading before moving to Emporia in 1942. He was employed by the Santa Fe Railroad for 40 years before retiring in 1984. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the Strato Jet Square Dance Club and the Santa Fe Oldtimers Club. He was a bluegrass enthusiast ,enjoyed fiddlers and pickers, camping and loved to travel. Virgil married Ruth M. Boyce on April 24, 1948 in Emporia. She survives. Other survivors include one son, Terry D. Wieland and wife, Millie J. of Valley Falls, one daughter, Debra L. Baughman and husband, Kurt of Overland Park, four grandchildren, Andrea. Stephanie, Tom and Jason and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Melissa and two brothers, Wilbert and Elba "Short". Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Grace United Methodist Church. Graveside committal services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Rosean Cemetery in Emporia. Virgil will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 1:30 - 3:00 p.m. Sunday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel.
