Viola Bessie Mitchell

Viola Bessie Mitchell, 92, formerly of Topeka, passed away on Thursday, September 18, 2014 at a care facility in Andover, KS. She was born May 24, 1922 in Topeka, the daughter of Edwin Emanuel and Nellie Bessie Higgins Peterson.

Viola graduated from Scandia High School in Scandia, KS. She had resided in Topeka since 1940. Viola was employed as the Director of Housekeeping for the Menninger Foundation for 28 years before retiring. She was a member of the First Christian Church.

Viola married Berton Earl Mitchell in June, 1940 in Scandia. He preceded her in death on December 23, 2006. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Anita Mitchell Donahue. Survivors include one son, Lawrence Mitchell of Kingston, WA, five grandchildren, Mistee, Monique, MiLana, Michael and Stephanie, ten great-grandchildren and one brother, Donald Peterson of Topeka.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, September 25, 2014 at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Alzheimer's Association, 3625 S.W. 29th St., Ste. 102, Topeka, KS 66614 or to Interim Hospice, 233 S. Broadway, Ste. 200, Wichita, KS 67202. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is assisting the family.
