He was born on March 4, 1940 in Salida, CO, the son of Herbert Otto Gaines and Anna Gaines.
He grew up in Thayer, MO.
He is preceded in death by wife, Julia Gaines; siblings, Charles, Gordon, Kenneth, Clayton, Ray, Herbert Gaines, Martha East, Leota DuBois, Mae Poulette, and Lois Adkins.
He is survived by sons, James Gaines of Scranton, KS, Melvin Gaines, and Victor D. Gaines, Jr., both of Meriden; sister, Myrtle Sorrell of Guthrie, OK; 4 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.
In following his wishes, cremation is planned. No public services will be held.
