Vernita Eidine Mitchell

Vernita Eidine Mitchell, 88, of Topeka, passed away Monday, November 18, 2019.
She was born November 29, 1930, in Osawatomie, Kansas, the daughter of Edward and Emma (Thoden) Kim. She is a graduate of Osawatomie High School.
Vernita has been a resident of Topeka, KS since 1951 and was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Topeka.
Vernita married Kenneth Mitchell on February 25, 1951 in Paola KS. He preceded her in death on June 27, 2012. She was also preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
Survivors include four children, Marilyn (John) Manwaring; Myrna Mitchell (Wayne Olson), Marla Mitchell (Jim Baker) and Dr. Daniel (Lori) Mitchell; one brother, Eldon Kim; one sister, Marsena Hadlock; eleven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Vernita worked for the Kansas State Legislature for over 35 years, retiring at age 78. She was a competitive runner and avid quilter. She loved gardening, and was recognized in 1998 for having the city's most beautiful shade garden. She fed backyard squirrels from her hand, always carrying peanuts in her pockets in case she encountered one of her favorites. She and her husband Ken built their first two houses themselves, without power tools. Vernita loved adventure, taking up skiing in her forties and skydiving twice in her eighties. She and her husband travelled frequently, including trips to Alaska and Europe as well as numerous road trips across the United States.
A Graveside Service will be 10:00 am, Saturday, November 23, 2019 at Memorial Park Cemetery, 3616 SW Sixth Ave., Topeka.
