Vera Lucille Johnson, 98, Topeka, died Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006 at Brewster Place.
She was born Feb. 25, 1907 in Chester, Nebraska, the daughter of Hervey and Mary Hampe Kanode. She attended Topeka public schools, graduating from Topeka High School and Washburn University. She received a Master's Degree from the University of Kansas.
Following college, she was employed in Washburn's botany department and later as a secretary for the Kansas Children's Service League in Topeka, and then as a librarian for Stormont-Vail's School of Nursing. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Vera married J. Leland Johnson on June 28, 1931. He died March 10, 1968. She was also preceded in death by her son, Richard Johnson.
Survivors include a grandson, Navy Lt. Scott Johnson, Middletown, RI; four nieces, Ruth Hupe, Perry; Helen Shuck, LaMesa, CA; Jean Lindemuth, Bella Vista, AR; Annette Corcoran, Pacific Beach, CA; three nephews, Charles Wright, Lecompton; Wilton Kanode, Spartanburg, SC; and Irwin Kanode, Huntington Beach, CA.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm Monday at Brewster Place Chapel. Private interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
