Veon D. Gurss, 68, of Tecumseh, passed away Wednesday, January 7, 2009.
He was born March 8, 1940 in Lawrence, Kansas, the son of Roy O. and Pauline (Pattan) Gurss. He was a 1958 graduate of Topeka High School.
He was owner of Gurss Motors, home of the "Oldies But Goodies," an independent used car dealer in Topeka since 1964. Mr. Gurss was a mentor to a long line of employees who went on to successful business careers. Among current employees, several have served more than two decades. He was awarded "Dealer of the Year" by the Kansas Independent Used Car Dealer Association.
He was an avid golfer and a member of the "Bogey Boys."
Veon married Patricia "Patti" Richardson on May 29, 1960 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include his son, Jade S. Gurss of Huntersville, NC; his daughter, Trisha D. Betts and her husband, Tim of Tecumseh; his brother Rollo Gurss (Doris) of El Paso, TX, and two sisters, LaDene Rickel (Virgil) of Lubbock, TX, and Sharrol Heruska of Robertsdale, AL; a dozen loving brothers and sisters-in-law; many nieces and nephews; and "little bitty buddy", Tyke.
Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m., Monday, January 12, 2009 at the Mount Hope Mausoleum Chapel, 4700 SW 17th St., Topeka. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Topeka. Mr. Gurss will lie in state after 2 p.m., Sunday at the Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, 1321 SW 10th, Topeka, where the family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Camp Wood YMCA, 1101 Camp Wood Rd, Elmdale, KS 66850.
