A memorial celebration of life for Veneta G. Guntert, 84, Topeka, will be Monday at 10:30 a.m., August 25th at First Presbyterian Church, 817 SW Harrison Street, Topeka. Graveside service will be Friday, August 22nd at 10:30 a.m. in Oak Hill Cemetery, Lawrence. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, August 21st at Penwell-Gable Mid-Town Chapel.
Mrs. Guntert, formerly of Lawrence, died August 18, 2008, at her home at Brewster Place following a long battle with Parkinson Disease. She was born December 5, 1923, in Oberlin, KS, the daughter of Harry Herman and Georgia Murrel (Grindle) Kump. She grew up in Oberlin, KS attending public schools in Oberlin until moving with her family to Lawrence, KS in 1940. She graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in Lawrence in 1941. She married Robert H. Guntert of Lawrence on August 21, 1943, in Wichita Falls, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1988, a daughter Margaret Ann Hearshman in 1995 and sister, Donal Lou Kump Keim, 2005.
Veneta was a Homemaker and along with husband, Bob were early advocates for people with disabilities through their involvement with TARC in the early 1960's. She was a dedicated volunteer for TARC and Sheltered Living before her health declined. She enjoyed tole and folk art painting with friends, her church circle, time with family, and the travel club.
Survivors include a son, David R. Guntert and his wife Teri of Lawrence; a son John A. Guntert, Topeka; a son-in-law, Timothy Hearshman, Overland Park; four grandchildren, Ehren D. Guntert, Tayler F. Guntert, Jordan S. Guntert, and Dan Hearshman and wife Tracy; one great granddaughter Avery Hearshman, and step brother Don Gardner and wife Beverly, Lawrence.
