Velma A. Walter, 81, of Topeka, KS, passed away in her daughter's Texas home on Sunday, December 21, 2008.
Velma was born December 29, 1926 in Abilene, KS to Luther and Alice (Mileson) Elliott. Prior to moving to Topeka, KS in 1958, Velma lived in Washington, KS and was employed by Kern's Grocery. In Topeka, she was employed by Sutton's Grocery for ten years and then Mike's IGA for four years. After retiring she volunteered over five years as a Foster Grandparent for the Capper Foundation. She took pride in her time spent with her grandchildren and will always be remembered for her love of clown figurines.
Velma leaves behind her son, Ronald Walter and his wife Charlot of Topeka; son, Michael Walter and his wife Margy of Topeka; daughter, Rebecca Dienst and her husband Sven of Justin, TX; 9 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; her brother, Lester Elliott of Manhattan, KS; and her brother, Eldon Elliott of Apache Junction, AZ. Velma is preceded in death by her loving husband, Harold H. Walter, who passed away in 1985; son Stanley who passed away in 1958; parents; four sisters (Priscilla, Leone, Orva, and Alice); and five brothers (Orvin, Luther, Dale, Chester, and Winston).
Velma will lie in state after 2:00 pm on Monday, December 29th, and the family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 30th, 11:00 AM, at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, with interment to follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in Velma's name to Capper Foundation.
