Velma Sumner Kipp, 96, went to be with the Lord Friday, Sept. 11, 2015, at Plaza West Care Center.
She was born Nov. 27, 1918 in Narka, Kan. to Dee and Lula Randolph Sumner.
Velma attended grade school and high school in Burr Oak, Kan. and graduated from Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kan. in 1940 with a degree in music.
Velma worked as a teacher in Prairie View, Kan. and later as a substitute teacher in the Oakland schools in Topeka. She later worked as a senior safety deposit clerk at First National Bank where she retired in 1983 after 14 years of service.
Velma was an active member of West Side Christian Church for over 60 years, serving as a Sunday School teacher, choir director and choir member. She was a member of SAI, a music sorority, for many years.
On June 21, 1942, she married Kenneth Gerrit Kipp in Los Angeles, Calif. She is survived by her son, Roger Kipp, Burlingame, Kan.; her daughters, Margaret Cochrane and her husband, Tom, Topeka; and Brenda Kipp, Topeka; and her grandchildren, Aaron, Melissa, Jason, Andrew, Nathan and Sarah; three step-grandchildren, Nathan G., Kelli and Kristi; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Velma was proceeded in death by her parents, her husband, her brothers, Lee and Doyle Sumner and four great-grandchildren, Conner Hitchens; Elijah, Peter and Hannah Cochrane.
Velma will lie in state from 3-5 p.m. on Monday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. The family will receive friends on Monday from 5-7 p.m. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at West Side Christian Church. Internment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Gardens.
