Velma L. Hartness

Velma L. Hartness, 81, of Topeka, passed away on Thursday, September 28, 2006 at a Topeka care facility. She was born on July 17, 1925 in Parsons, the daughter of James Richard and Winona Sawtell January. She moved to Topeka in 1960. She was a member of Crestview United Methodist Church and was a member of the United Methodist Women where she served as past President, a member of the Topeka Home Builders Auxillary where she served as a past President and volunteered for Doorstep and Valeo Behavorial Health Care. Velma married Louis E. Hartness on December 31, 1944. He preceded her in death on September 29, 1989. Survivors include two sons, Louis L. Hartness and James E. Hartness and one daughter, Angela K. Hartness all of Topeka, seven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, three brothers and five sisters. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday at Crestview United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Gardens. Velma will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel where the family will receive friends from 7:00-8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Doorstep, Inc., 1119 S.W. 10th Ave., Topeka, KS 66604 or Crestview United Methodist Church, 2245 S.W.
