99, Topeka passed away May 1, 2004 at Southern Meadows Care Home. Mrs. Friel was born April 2, 1905 at Onaga, KS the daughter of Frank and Pearl Kimball Melton and moved to Havensville, KS in 1912 where she attended school and spent her early years. Velma moved to Topeka and attended Strickler's Business College.
She worked in the millinery department of Pelletier's Department Store for 10 years and worked for the State Of Kansas for 29 years, retiring in 1969.

Mrs. Friel was a member of First Presbyterian Church, a 50 year member of the Order of Eastern Star, Topeka Chapter #462, life member of The Woman's Club Of Topeka.

Velma was married to Russell E. Friel July 22, 1925 at Holton, KS. He preceded her in death February 17, 1963.


Cremation is planned. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am Friday, May 7, 2004 in Havensville Cemetery, Havensville, KS. Memorial contributions may be made to Helpings Hands Humane Society or Topeka Rescue Mission. Penwell-Gabel Midtown Chapel is handling arrangments.
