Velma B. Dixon

Velma Bernice Dixon, 79, of Topeka, KS passed away on March 11, 2009.
Vel, as she liked to be called, was born on July 8, 1929 in Oakley, Kansas. She was the youngest of four children born to Carl and Bertha Stoecker. After graduating from Oakley High School in 1945, she attended Dodge City Community College, where she graduated with an associate's degree. She was married to Orville Lee Barngrover who preceded her in death in 1949. She moved to Lawrence to attend the University of Kansas, graduating with a degree in music education. She relocated to Topeka in 1952 and married Dale E. Dixon in 1955. She was a music education teacher in the Highland Park school district and later went into real estate sales where she worked for Coldwell Banker/Griffith and Blair, for over 30 years. Vel was an active member of her church and Chapter FI of the PEO Sisterhood.
She is survived by her children, Marsha Dixon Monica, Leawood, KS; Brian Craig Dixon, Englewood, CO; and Jeffrey Ward Dixon, Foothill Ranch, CA. She leaves behind seven grandchildren, Matthew Monica, Mallory Daniels and husband Capt. Clay Daniels, Craig Dixon, Katherine Dixon, Christopher Dixon, Mitchell Dixon, and Lauren Dixon. She also has two great grandchildren, Payton Daniels and Everett Daniels. She precedes in death her husband Dale Dixon. She also leaves behind two brothers and sisters in law: Floyd and Ruby Stoecker, Sacramento, CA and Vernon and Marge Stoecker, Oakley, KS. Arnold Stoecker, a brother, preceded her in death.
She was greatly loved and cherished by her family and will be sorely missed.

A Memorial Service will be held on March 14, 2009 at 2:00 pm at First United Methodist Church, 600 SW Topeka Blvd. Private interment will be at the Oakley Cemetery, Oakley, KS. She will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Friday at the Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions maybe made to the First United Methodist Church at 600 SW Topeka Blvd. Topeka KS 66603.
