Ulysses "Whit" Whitmore


68, Topeka, passed away March 13, 2004 in Topeka. He was born August 21, 1935 in Muddyfork, Arkansas, the son of Walter and Ruby Bullock Whitmore.

He attended public schools in Muddyfork and Little Rock Arkansas. He served in the US Army as a Heavy Weapons Infantryman from 1958 to 1960. While serving in the Army, he earned the Good Conduct Medal, Expert Badge(Rifle) and Marksman Badge (Pistol).

He retired in 1992 after 31 years of service from the Youth Center at Topeka.

He married Phyllis McKnight in 1961, they were divorced. He married Mattie Downing in Topeka, she preceded him in death.

He was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who was baptized and accepeted Jesus Christ as his Savior, loved his family and spending time fishing and helping others in need.

Survivors include his children, Carmen Jackson, Topeka, Ulysses Hendricks, Little Rock, Arkansas; Stephanie Jones, San Antonio, Texas, Alfreda Wheeler, Topeka; and Shawn L. Whitmore, Sr., Topeka; an uncle, Burley Bullock, Baytown Texas, nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren; and his friend Evelyn Brown.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 at 11:00AM at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be at Penwell Gabel Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors. Mr. Whitmore will lie in state from noon Tuesday until time of service at Penwell Gabel Midtown Chapel, where family will receive friends from 6 to 8PM Tuesday evening. Memorial contributions may be made to CFS Stuco Outreach Community for Tom Singelton in care of Stephanie Carr, 211 West 4th St.
