Tommy Lee "Tom" Long, 79, of Topeka, passed away Sunday, August 10, 2014.
He was born March 22, 1935 in Topeka, the son of Charles and Ellen (Beckley) Long. He attended Highland Park High School.
Mr. Long was a sheet metal worker for Kansas Sheet Metal, and was employed in the service station industry for many years and would later own and operate Tom's Service Center from 1977, retiring in 1997. After retirement he was a maintenance technician and served as President of the Quail Creek Homeowners Association. He also worked as a greeter for HyVee for four years.
He was a member of Community Church, and life-time member and Past-President of West Topeka Kiwanis all of Topeka. He was named Retailer of the Year from Texaco Oil Company. He assisted on a super modified racing pit crew and built several race cars.
Tom married Lorraine M. Fraker on August 8, 1975 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include children, Vicki Hoffman-Turner, Idaho; Brenda (David) Alfrey, California; Thomas (Pat) Long, Hoyt, KS; Claire Long, Westminster, CO; Craig R. (Belinda)Wasson, Topeka and Marne W. (Todd) Fischer, Topeka; nine grandchildren, Justin (Christy) Alfrey, Jesse (Kandace) Alfrey, Jared Alfrey, Daniel (Shannon) Long, Christopher (Heather) Long, Charles (Tiffany) Long, Caleb Wasson, Caren (Brian) Gottstein and Emily Fischer; seven great-grandchildren, Caiden, Tessa, Evelyn, Beau and Elizabeth Alfrey, Kayden and Emma Long, and Seth, Nicholas and Kaitlyn Long; and a sister, Mary Ellen (John) Vausbinder, Topeka.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Clarence, Carver and Charles Long.
A graveside service will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, August 14, 2014 at Sunset Cemetery, Manhattan, KS. The family will receive friends from 6-7:30p.m., Thursday evening at Community Church, 1819 SW 21st, Topeka, KS 66604. Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel is assisting the family.
