Thomas West Jones

Thomas West Jones, 65, Topeka, died Saturday, June 9, 2007 at his home from complications of Inclusion Body Myositis.

Tom was born Feb. 11, 1942 in St. Louis, MO, the son of Robert McKittrick Jones II and Anne Fitz-Gerald Jones. He attended The Country Day School of St. Louis, and Rumsey Hall and The Kent School, both in Connecticut, and graduated from Kemper Military School, Boonville, MO in 1961. He earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Washburn University in 1969, and his Master of Science Degree from Kansas State University in 1979.

Tom began his special education teaching career at Topeka Youth Center, and his last 17 years at Topeka High School, retiring in 2004. While a teacher at Topeka High, he was assistant debate and forensics coach, was the first boys soccer coach, and was an assistant administrator. He was a qualified National Forensics judge. His love for Topeka High School and the students led him to actively serve in many capacities, such as a mentor for Student Council, after prom activities, the Topeka High marching band, and a variety of clubs and student organizations. He also served on a number of Topeka Public School District Councils and was honored for his DCAC chairmanship. He was presented with an honorary Topeka High School diploma.

Tom served as a Boy Scout leader for several years, and was a member of Grace Episcopal Cathedral.

He married Nancy Deatrick on June 1, 1968 in Topeka. She survives.

Other survivors include three sons, Nathan Deatrick Jones of Topeka, Christopher West Jones and wife, Rose, of Irvine, CA, Andrew Fitz-Gerald Jones of Kansas City, MO; one brother, Robert McKittrick Jones III and wife, Linda, of St. Louis, MO; two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Cori-Jones of Gainesville, FL and Carroll West Jones of East Hampton, Long Island, NY; and 14 nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his special companion of seven years, his dog, Bianca. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of Tom's life will be held at 5:45 pm Wednesday at the Bradbury Thompson Alumni Center on the Washburn University campus.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be sent in Tom's name to the Topeka High School Debate and Forensics program, 800 SW 10th Ave, Topeka 66612 or to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 15301 West 87th Street Parkway, #255, Shawnee Mission, KS 66219.
