Thomas "Tom" Moore, Jr., Kansas City, Mo., passed away on Thursday, March 29, 2018, at North Care Hospice in North Kansas City, Missouri.
An evening visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka, KS 66604.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 6, 2018 at Mount Hope Cemetery & Funeral Chapel, 4700 SW 17th Street, Topeka, KS. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until service time. The family will host a reception immediately following the services at Dillon House, 404 SW 9th Street, Topeka, KS 66612.
Tom was born January 28, 1936 in Topeka, KS, the first of two children to Tom J. and Helen Margaret Moore. He attended public schools in Topeka and graduated from the University of Kansas. In high school he participated in football, basketball, track, band and was elected Vice-President of the Senior Class. At KU, Tom was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. He served the fraternity as an Honor Initiate, Pledge Trainer and President. He was active in and loyal to fraternity matters, including service on the House Corporation for 15 years. At KU he was a member of Sachem Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa Society, the Chancellors Club, a lifetime member of the KU Alumni Association and editor of the campus humor magazine. Tom supported KU women's basketball and was a member of the Hardwood Club. He fulfilled his college contract with ROTC and entered the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant at Fort Lee, VA. He left the U.S. Army Reserves as a Captain in 1965. He was a member of the Platte Woods United Methodist Church, Sports Car Club of America, Public Links Seniors of Kansas, Topeka High School Historical Society and a supporter of Habitat for Humanity.
Tom retired as the first CFO of the 16th Judicial Circuit Court of Missouri and as an Administrative Assistant at United Parcel Service, with over 24 years of service at each.
Throughout his life, Tom was a thoughtful, observant, and generous soul. He was known for his quick sense of humor, and for caring for others by making even the "little" things special, seeing and meeting needs quietly and humbly. With a keen sense of adventure and strong intellectual curiosity, he opened doors to the fun and beauty of the world for the many who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother George Herzog Moore.
Tom is survived by his loving companion, Lesa Auld, Kansas City, MO, and the mother of his children, Bettie Chapin, Clinton, MO.; his son and daughter-in-law Kurtis and Patty Moore, Clinton, MO; his daughter and son-in-law Lisa and Tommy Nelson, Purcellville, VA; and grandchildren Melissa (Chad) Goodloe, Clinton, MO; John (Jennie) Moore, Clinton, MO; Susan, Christy and Sara Nelson, Purcellville, VA. Great grandchildren Carson and Maddison Goodloe, Clinton, MO; Colton and Connor Moore, Clinton, MO.
Tom took great pride in the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren and the love they shared. He will be missed.
