Thomas Joe Comfort, 76, Topeka, passed away Saturday, August 9, 2014.
Tom was born October 31, 1937 in Topeka, the son of Thomas Josiah and Vera Mae (Kraus) Comfort. He graduated from Hiawatha High School and attended Washburn University.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1956 and was stationed at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Colorado and the 98th General Hospital in Germany. After serving, he returned to Topeka and Washburn University where he was active in theater.
He enrolled in the Electronic Computer Programming Institute and graduated in New York. He then helped with the initial conversion to computers at First National Bank, Victory Life Insurance Company and Volume Shoe Corporation; before becoming a Computer Systems Analyst with the State of Kansas, Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services. He retired in 1998.
Tom married Linda Lee Brown on July 29, 1962 in Topeka. In 1974, they moved to Carbondale, where Tom raised miniature mules and donkeys and enjoyed participating in parades. While in Carbondale, he was active in Kiwanis, began Square dancing and joined the Kuntry Kuzzins Square Dance Club. He and Linda also learned Clog dancing and were on the original team of Sunflower State Cloggers, taking part in performances and competitions in several states. He was an avid puzzler, juggler, collected yoyos, clocks and a variety of unique kites. He truly had a zest for life.
Just prior to retiring, Tom and Linda returned to Topeka and enjoyed many years of good life. Tom is survived by his wife. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William; and sister, Penelope.
Tom has been cremated and Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 15, 2014 at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery.
