Master Sergeant Theodore Rudolph "Ted" Mize, 92, of Topeka, passed away on Monday, January 1, 2024 at a Topeka hospital. He was born on August 9, 1931 in Topeka, the son of Theodore A. and Wanda M. (Price) Mize.
Ted graduated from Topeka High School in 1949. He was a Navy Veteran, serving in the Korean War. He owned and operated Ted Mize & Son Crane Rental for 35 years with his father. He then enlisted in the Kansas Air National Guard and served an additional 20 years before retiring from the Air Force after serving during Desert Storm.
He has been a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years, CERTS Team and a driver for the Red Cross. Ted was a Sheriff and a Police Department Academy Member. He was also an appointed a member of the Landmark Council of Topeka. He was a volunteer for the Huff 'n Puff Balloon Rally for many years. In 2013 he was selected to be a Sunflower Hero for his volunteer work with the City of Topeka.
Ted married Constance L. Schad on April 5, 1953 in Topeka. She preceded him in death on February 17, 2009.
Survivors include his children, Bruce A. (Cherie) Mize of Cameron, Missouri, Dianne M. Reed of Topeka, and Dennis M. Mize of Topeka; three grandchildren, Valyant (Lindsey) Reed, Crystal Mack, and Karen (Christian) Berglander; and two great-grandchildren, Sa'maree and Addis Mack.
Services will be held at 12:30pm, Friday January 12, 2024 at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, 1321 SW 10th St, Topeka. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, 4700 SW 17th St, Topeka. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday January 11, 2024 at the funeral home.
